KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

WHICH ROUTE SHOULD I DO?

There are seven routes that you can take up to the mountain: Northern Circuit Route, Lemosho Route, Shira Route, Machame Route, Rongai Route, Marangu Route and Umbwe Route. The answer on which route should be the best for you depends on how many days you have for a tour, what you want the most from your hike/climb, how good acclimatized you already are and many other conditions. Make sure you choose a route long enough, which will give your body the longest possible time to acclimatize to the altitude. I recommend you that you choose the proper acclimatization schedule and enough days for the mountain to safely make your summit and enjoy all the way up and down.

BEST TIME TO CLIMB

Due to Mount Kilimanjaro’s proximity to the equator, this region does not experience the extremes of winter and summer weather, but rather dry and rainy seasons. The main trekking seasons on Kilimanjaro correspond with the mountain’s two dry seasons: from January to March and from June to October. Wet season is in the month from March to June and in the November. On Kilimanjaro the weather is unpredictable and may come early or extend beyond their typical periods. It is possible to experience mostly dry weather conditions during the rainy season, just as it is possible to have heavy rain during the dry season. Because of that, it is important to have all gear with you, including warm and waterproof clothing.

THE EXPEDITION CREW

The number of mountain crew assisting you on your expedition will depend on the size of the group and the amount of the equipment they need to carry. You can expect at least  1 lead guide, 1 assistant guide, 1 cook and 3 porters per person.

PASSPORT/VISA/INSURANCE

Travel insurance is mandatory to climb Kilimanjaro. Insurance provides you with coverage against unforeseen circumstances. Travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters. It should also cover medical, repatriation costs, and trip cancellation. Without travel insurance, helicopter evacuation and medical treatment may be denied.

VACCINATIONS

There are no mandatory vaccinations needed for climbing Kilimanjaro and other mountains in Tanzania, except for Yellow Fever, which is mandatory for people coming from countries known as risk zone for that disease. Recommended vaccinations are: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Polio, Tetanus, Meningococcal meningitis, Rabies, Malaria.

In terms of the best route and climbing time, we recommend consulting with our mountain guide, who can provide expert advice, based on your preferences and the current conditions.
